The difference between label paper and thermal paper
Date:2025-06-04

Label paper and thermal paper are two materials that we often come into contact with in our daily life and work. They have certain differences in usage, characteristics, printing methods, etc. Below, we will introduce in detail the differences between them.

1. Different uses

Label paper is commonly used for product labels, shipping labels, logistics labels, etc. in the commercial field. And thermal paper is mainly used for bills, express delivery notes, laboratory test reports, medical industry and other aspects. It can be seen that the application scenarios of the two are different. Label paper is more used for information transmission and product identification, while thermal paper is mainly used for printing various forms and documents.

2. Different printing methods

Label paper is usually printed using inkjet, laser, offset printing, gravure printing, and other methods, while thermal paper is mainly printed using thermal printing technology. This is because a thermal sensitive coating is applied to the thermal paper, and by heating the print head in contact with the paper surface, the thermal dye reacts with the color agent to form patterns or text. This method has the advantages of being fast, clear, and convenient, and is suitable for situations where a large number of bills or documents need to be printed.

3. Different physical characteristics

Label paper is usually coated with a layer of glue, which can be applied to materials such as packaging boxes and item surfaces. Thermal paper, on the other hand, does not have such a requirement as its surface usually does not contain any glue or adhesive substances. In addition, during the thermal printing process, thermal paper releases thermal dyes and color generators, making it sensitive to temperature, humidity, light, and other conditions. It needs to be stored properly and avoid prolonged exposure to light.

4. Different materials

There are also differences in the materials of label paper and thermal paper. Label paper is mainly divided into two types: paper and plastic. Among them, paper label paper usually uses thicker materials with good wear resistance and water resistance. Plastic label paper is more durable and can withstand higher temperatures and humidity. Thermal paper is mainly divided into two types: direct heating and indirect heating. The former has a paper surface in direct contact with the print head and is suitable for low-speed printing, low resolution, and low-cost scenarios; The latter uses aluminum foil or film as an intermediate medium, suitable for high-speed printing, high-resolution and other scenarios.

In summary, there are many differences between label paper and thermal paper in terms of usage, printing methods, physical properties, and materials. When making choices, we need to base them on actual needs and budget, and pay attention to their storage and usage conditions to avoid affecting their lifespan and effectiveness.
